Getting Around Taiwan: A Transport Guide

High-speed rail, metros, buses and the one card that does it all — how to travel Taiwan easily and cheaply.

High Speed Rail

The High Speed Rail (HSR) runs down the west coast, connecting Taipei to Kaohsiung in about 90 minutes. It is fast, punctual and comfortable — the quickest way to cover long distances.

Metros and the EasyCard

Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taoyuan have clean, cheap metro systems. Buy a stored-value EasyCard (悠遊卡) — it works on metros, buses, most trains, convenience stores and even some taxis across the island.

Trains and buses

The conventional TRA railway loops the island, including the scenic east coast. Intercity buses are cheap and comfortable, and city buses reach almost everywhere. For remote spots, scooters and rental cars fill the gaps.

Practical tips

Reserve HSR seats at busy times. Stand on the right on escalators. Buses may require you to signal the driver to stop. Google Maps works well for public transport across Taiwan.
