World’s Largest Floating Solar Facility On Schedule For 2022-23
Following the completion of an initial feasibility study, a project likely to turn into the world’s largest ever floating solar facility to date is now on track to be brought online sometime over the 2022-2-23 timeframe – in the north central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. When complete, the proposed 600 MW site will be funded in part by the World Bank and located near the 13 year old Omkareshwar Dam gravity dam located on the Narmada River just upstream of Mandhata in Khandwa district according to Madhya Pradesh’s New & Renewable Energy Minister, Mr. Hardeep Singh Dang

In recent years India has been a world leader in the installation of solar power facilities, although an over saturation in some areas in central and eastern India is now leading to ever decreasing feed in tariffs (FiTs) which in turn is forcing industry-scale investors to look elsewhere to benefit from their moves into renewables.

The site to be constructed in Madhya Pradesh being a floating solar facility – still something of a rarity on the Indian subcontinent – has not yet seen details released on end-market FiT projections, although the fact that International Finance Corporation, alongside the World Bank are backing it will carry great weight.

As recently as mid-2020, the world’s largest similar floating solar facility – in Anhui, China – was just 25% of the size of the proposed Madhya Pradesh project.
