Kuta is a town in Ayedire Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria. It is the traditional seat of the Kuta Kingdom, historically known as Owu-Kuta, and one of four district headquarters within Ayedire LGA, alongside Ile Ogbo, Oke Osun (Alabata), and Olupona.
According to oral tradition, the name Kuta derives from the phrase "Iku-ta-mi" ("I have escaped death"), reportedly uttered by Akindele Anlugbua after fleeing a war at Ipole with his pregnant wife. The phrase was later shortened to "Kuta".
Kuta traces its founding to the mid-15th century, when Akindele Anlugbua, a prince of the Owu people, migrated from Orile-Owu following a succession dispute in which his younger brother was chosen to rule instead of him. Akindele was a son of Oba Ajibosin Asukungbade, the first Olowu of Owu-Ipole.
Akindele's son, Morolahun, became the first Olowu of Kuta, reigning from 1457 to 1552. The four present-day ruling houses of Kuta descend from Morolahun's four sons. The Olowu of Kuta was officially recognised as a First-Class King in 1966.
